Our Senses: Tools of Connection
Amy and Rosa rugosa
We are born with some pretty spectacular tools that are called ‘our senses.’ Through these senses we experience the world, learning about ourselves, our environment, our likes and dislikes, what brings us joy, what fills us with wonder and what we would rather not engage with.
Let us take a bit of time to explore how our senses are windows through which we connect with the living world to which we belong.
I can think of no better gift to give our children than to teach them, through experiences with the plants, to trust their own experiences. To learn to put language to ‘how something affects them, and how to verbalize this effect.’ The plants’ provide us with the perfect lens through which we can learn about ourselves, developing our self confidence, self awareness and self trust in our own experiences. We are taught so many things in school, but we are not necessarily taught to go within and get acquainted with the ‘language of connection’ that our senses provide for us. However, the ability to know our own inner terrain, allows us to clearly experience how our daily life-walk affects us, creating an inner operating system that is both curious about the world around us and able to learn self discernment, awareness and self confidence.
